Humility as a Leadership tonic

Humility is a tonic for anybody desiring leadership.  Humility is not equivalent to stupidity and it is not derogatory.  Rather it is the stimulus needed to win peoples’ confidence and dig for results. When God chooses you to be a leader, definitely He will use you to help the esteem of others.  If anyone has a problem feeling good about himself, such a person will find it very difficult boosting other people’s esteem because nobody can give what he doesn’t have.  If you cannot see greatness in somebody else, it is proof that you’re small. 

 

We do not see things the way they are, rather we see things the way we are.  The proof of humility is service.  If you can see greatness in somebody else, you will be willing to do anything to let that greatness find expression.  Great leaders in history are known to have applied a touch of humility to enable them succeed.

 

When you recognize potential in people, you will see the wide gap between who they are and who they could be.  Your being a leader is to help them to become the best they could be.  That is what leadership is all about.  Whoever has this quality of humility, will serve and it will be reflected by his willingness to reach over beyond himself to help others.

 

The occupation of any position is simply a permission to become a leader.  Position does not make one a leader.  If everything that defines your authority as a leader is the title you have been given, you are not a leader. You are following in the wrong position.  Our world today must come to the point where it makes a difference between people who want positions and those who want to serve. 

 

We must come to the point where those who have not achieved anything for themselves should not bother to occupy political office, because with political power, you are expected to just multiply what you already have.  When corrupt people get into positions of leadership, leadership multiplies their corruption.  When the person who has created wealth legitimately for himself becomes a leader, he uses this position to multiply wealth for everybody else.

 

A humble person sees good in himself.  He also sees and praises the good in others.  He is willing to deploy his good being to bring out the best in others.  He defers to others who are better.  A proud leader is an insecure leader, who would explore all ways to take every credit to himself.  The more credit he takes to himself, the more he loses.  A proud leader is threatened by the success of his or her subordinates.

 

Leadership is all about service to mankind.  However, it is fashionable today to find people who seek various types of positions to exhibit greatness or success.  Greatness is not in what we give, but it is in what we accumulate. 

 

Wealth is what we have accumulated.  Whoever finds himself in a  position of leadership should know that he is nothing but a servant and not a master with a licence to conquer or dominate others.  Oh! man, go ahead to drink from the fountain of humility and become a leader.

VISION, STRATEGY, AND TACTICS

 

Your vision is your dream of what you want the organization to be.  Your strategy is the large-scale plan you will follow to make the dream happen.  Your tactics are the specific actions you will take to follow the plan.  Now let us start with the vision and work down to the tactics as you plan for your organizations.

Ø  Vision:  A vision is an over-riding idea of what the organization should be often it reflects the dream of the leader or founder.  “Your company’s vision could be for example to be the largest telecommunications gadgets retailer in the country”, or the management consultant of choice for non-profit organizations in the southwest.  A vision must be sufficiently clear and concise that everyone in the organization understand it and can buy into it with passion.

Ø  Strategy:  Your strategy is one or more plans that you will use to achieve your vision.  To be the largest retailer of telecommunication gadgets in the country, you might have to decide whether it is a better strategy for you to buy other retailers, try to grow a single retailer, or combination of both.  A strategy looks inward at the organization, but it also looks outward at the competition, environment and business climate.  As a management consultant, of choice for non-profit organization in the southeast your strategy would need to evaluate what other companies offer management consulting services in the southwest, which of those target non-profit and which companies could in the future begin to offer competing services.  Your strategy also must determine how you will become “the consultant of choice”.  What will you do so that your targeted customers choose you over everyone else?  Are you going to offer the lowest fees?  Will you offer a guarantee?  Will you hire the very best people and build a reputation for delivering the most innovative solutions?  If you decide to compete on lowest billing rates, what will you do if a competing consulting firms drops their rates below yours?  If you decide to hire the best people, how will you attract them?  Will you pay the highest salaries in seven-state areas; give each employee an ownership position in the company.

Ø  Tactics:  Your tactics are the specific actions, sequences of actions, and schedules you will use to fulfill your strategy.  If you have more than one strategy you will have different tactics for each.  A strategy to be the most well known management consultant, as part of your vision to be “the management consultant of choice for non-profit organization on the southeast” might involves tactics like adverting in the southeast Non-profit Quarterly Newsletter for three successive issues, adverting in the three largest – circulation newspaper in the southeast for the next 6 months.  You need to change with them, or ahead of them.  However, with respect to vision, strategy and tactics, you need some flexibility and some firmness.  Hold on to your dream; your vision, don’t let that be buffeted by the winds of change.  Your vision should be the anchor that holds all the rest together.  Strategy is a long-term plan, so it may needs to change in response to internal or external changes, but strategy changes should only happen with considerable thought.  Change of strategy also should not happen until you have a new one to replace the old one.  Tactics are the most flexible.  If some tactics isn’t working, adjust it and try again.

Customer Reactivation Campaign  is a process whereby a company re-establish contact either in the form of email or regular mail with those customers of theirs that they(the company) had neglected either delibrately or otherwise.
